Will the Iranian Election Be the Same As the Mexican Elections?
| When thinking about stolen elections in Iran you have to hope they end up with the people winning. We were all inspired by the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine that brought down that illegal election, but the way this election will end seems to be more like the many failed attempts to get votes actually counted. I was reminded of the Mexican election where despite all the polls and exit polls the right leaning candidate won. The people took to the streets and we were all hopeful the right person would be put in place. I even wrote about it with glowing headline: Now This is How You Fight an Illegal Vote. But without a clear way to invalidate an illegal election the opposition just waned and seemingly (at least in press coverage) went away. In Iran it seems that the result is much the same, although the ruling elite are much more ruthless and violent. How will this end peaceably with the Iranian people getting the justice they deserve? What will happen when the Ayatollah's don't relent? Is there enough muster to shut down the country in a nonviolent way to get the change the Iranian people deserve? I have no experience in running country wide opposition to a stolen election, but it seems a general strike and peaceably shutting down the streets are the next steps. Marching only raises awareness. To take down a powerful regime you must squeeze them economically as well as morally with nonviolence. More will suffer, too many innocent people simply wanting their rights will die. But there must be hope for the Iranian people. As we watch we all pray justice is delivered.
