Beyonce’s song is not a statement, It is STUPID
| Beyonce for some unknown reason has gotten accolades for her song “If I Were A Boy.” If ever there was a statement on how bad corporate music has gotten and how far the median of R&B has fallen a horrendously awful song like this could be considered to have an actual message. There are real issues with gender discrimination. As a feminist I understand that there is a privilege to being a man. What I would give to have someone have an intelligent conversation or a good lyric go commercial that deals with the complexity of male privilege. (really any privilege at all) Indeed some of the issues she raises are symptoms of the inequality in the way our society treats women. But Beyonce’s song is just a horrible horrible attempt to deal with them. For example: If I were a boyYou can do that now… you don’t have to be a boy, the fact that you can’t isn’t a function of your genitalia it is because of your celebrity status and personal choice. Most of the women I know just roll out of bed put on the jeans on the floor. Is there a double standard of how women need to present themselves and how men can. Absolutely, but does this song get at that… HELL NO. Wait it gets worse: …I’d put myself firstThis is just because you dated an asshole, what does this have to do with Gender? I have been and know many men who have been cheated on and/or treated poorly. There is no gender difference in that respect. Do we teach boys how to love and being in relationships differently than how we raise girls… no question. And that plays out in horrible ways everyday in relationships. But Dear G-d if this is the best we can do to cover that issue, I may just give up on Feminism now. Beyonce’s song “If I were a boy” is just plain horrible. It hurts my soul that someone with at least a modicum of talent could record, promote, and allow to be on the radio such a fundamentally terrible song. What is worse than all of that Beyonce has done, are those complete morons who have not had the decency to follow evolution and be thinned from the heard, who think that this song should be given credit as some sort of treatise on gender inequality. For those people I only have one request: DO NOT REPRODUCE THE HUMAN RACE MAY DEPEND ON IT. Labels: Beyonce, Corporate Media, Feminism, Gender, Hip Hop is Dead, If I Were A Boy |
