The Biggest Story of Our Lives

At 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Election Day, I checked the sportsbook odds in Las Vegas and via the offshore bookmakers to see the odds as of that moment on the Presidential election. John Kerry was a two-to-one favorite. You can look it up.

People who have lived in the sports world as I have, bettors in particular, have a feel for what I am about to say about this: these people are extremely scientific in their assessments. These people understand which information to trust and which indicators to consult in determining where to place a dividing line to influence bets, and they are not in the business of being completely wrong. Oddsmakers consulted exit polling and knew what it meant and acknowledged in their oddsmaking at that moment that John Kerry was winning the election.

And he most certainly was, at least if the votes had been fairly and legally counted. What happened instead was the biggest crime in the history of the nation, and the collective media silence which has followed is the greatest fourth-estate failure ever on our soil.

Many of the participants in this blog have graduate school educations. It is damned near impossible to go to graduate school in any but the most artistic disciplines without having to learn about the basics of social research and its uncanny accuracy and validity. We know that professionally conceived samples simply do not yield results which vary six, eight, ten points from eventual data returns, thaty's why there are identifiable margins for error. We know that margins for error are valid, and that results have fallen within the error range for every Presidential election for the past fifty years prior to last fall. NEVER have exit polls varied by beyond-error margins in a single state, not since 1948 when this kind of polling began. In this past election it happened in ten states, all of them swing states, all of them in Bush's favor. Coincidence? Of course not.

Karl Rove isn't capable of conceiving and executing such a grandiose crime? Wake up. They did it. The silence of traditional media on this subject is enough to establish their newfound bankruptcy. The revolution will have to start here. I challenge every other thinker at the Huffington Post: is there any greater imperative than to reverse this crime and reestablish democracy in America? Why the mass silence? Let's go to work with the circumstantial evidence, begin to narrow from the outside in, and find some witnesses who will turn. That's how they cracked Watergate. This is bigger, and I never dreamed I would say that in my baby boomer lifetime.

Really Saving Social Security

E.J. Dionne, put me in my place. He explained that Dems should not call for an increase in the payroll tax alone to save Social Security. We must see resolving the problem of Social Security as the role for all Americans.

The plan is simple, put surtax on dividends and capital gains. These taxes have been cut significantly over the past 4 years of the Bush Administration, a simple surtax would keep Social Security solvent.

Or the recent cut of the Estate Tax also known as the Paris Hilton Inheritance Tax cut if it were to be reversed and used to keep social security solvent would also solve the problem.

Bush for his part claims the plans that he may introduce but has not officially yet, would only cut promised benefits for the rich. But according to the plans the rich is defined as anyone making over $21,000

$21,000 think about that. That is the official poverty line for a family of four. IF of two parents and two children make only $21,000 a year they are not only far from Rich, they are barely feeding their children.

If you make $25,000 to $30,000 you would get a 30% reduction, and the reductions go up from there. This is a real cut.

What do the Republican talking heads and corporate media who also echo this false claim of the rich paying for Social security,

Well O’Reiley says that he will just give away his Social Security because he doesn’t need it.

HERES AN IDEA, IF YOU ARE SO WELL OFF YOU WON’T NEED A STEADY INCOME WHEN YOU ARE NO LONGER WORKING,

GIVE UP THE TAX CUTS BUSH PASSED ON THE RICHEST 1%.

As he says he doesn’t need it.

That of course would end any problems with Social Security from now until 75 years off if not more.

Social Security: Another Case of Media's Failure

I am going to put it simply so the Media who misses this obvious contridiction can get it.

If the country's GDP grows at the slow 1.5 to 2% rate that President Bush assumes when stating the Social Security Trust will be bankrupt by 2024, Private accounts will be a complete disaster as the stock market will tank.

Simply put a growth rate of that low we would have more problems then just a strained social security system, it would mean the Economy was not growing fast enough to account for increases in Job demand, and Inflation would probably be outpacing economic growth causing Stagflation.

President Bush is a liar

His numbers are not based in reality, and no one seems to want to call him on it.

Of course there is a simple answer to save social security. Raise Payroll Tax on the richest Americans would make it secure for 75 years or more.

Bush could be right about the Economic growth, he certainly has proved a poor steward of the economy that could cause such a demise, but clearly Privatization would not be the answer.

The paper would go on to influence the Supreme Court in its landmark decision in Brown v. the Board of Education that ruled school segregation was unconstitutional.
