Passion in our Lives?

We spend so much time trying to keep ourselves busy to pass the time.  Is this how we were meant to fill our lives?   Honestly, because it seems even in religion 3, 5 times a day we are supposed to pray, meditate, work... whatever, but it amount to filling days till they are all gone.  Why?

I head someone say that the middleages were more passionate times.  Honor, wars, death, famine, life was short but to the point.  Maybe that is what we need to fill our days.  Maybe that is why we have war, shopping, fashion, politics, arguments, love, sex, school, jobs, poverty, religion.  They are things we created to make our days more "meaningful" give us something to do.  But are they just fillers?
